Jack Nicklaus in a quiet moment during tournament play, holding a golf ball and club, wearing a cardigan and glove. A gallery and an ABC speaker appear behind him—a close portrait from his dominant 1970s era.

Custom framed in Venice by Sherman Gallery.

Photographer & provenance

The original seller identifies this print as originating from the archives of the Union-Tribune Publishing Company in San Diego, California. Their description records a “JOE FRYMAN PHOTOGRAPHER” stamp and a Union-Tribune property/reproduction stamp on the reverse, noting the negative and print as property of the Union-Tribune Publishing Company.

Date & setting

Attributed by the original seller to circa the mid-1970s. Nicklaus’s clothing, the ABC speaker and the mountainous background suggest an ABC-covered tournament in the western United States, possibly California or nearby. The exact event, location and date have not been confirmed.

The details

  • Black-and-white newsroom photograph.
  • Print size: approximately 8 × 10 inches, borderless, according to the original seller; this is the photograph size, not the framed dimensions.
  • Black frame, white mat, portrait orientation.
  • The seller describes the paper stock, period stamps and presentation as consistent with a Type I, first-generation print. It was not submitted to PSA, according to that description, and the Type I classification has not been independently authenticated.

Condition

The original seller reports good tonal range and clarity, with light newsroom handling consistent with age and no major creases, tears or distracting defects. These are seller-reported condition notes; please refer to the photographs of the actual framed piece.

Price includes the individual photograph and its custom frame. You will receive the framed piece pictured; other works shown in the gallery-wall photograph are sold separately.

What Type I means

Type I (Type One) describes a print made directly from the original camera negative within roughly two years of the exposure. It connects the physical photograph to the period in which the image was taken. The classification concerns the print’s generation and timing, rather than its condition or rarity.
